Amazon is one of the only companies willing to explore and implement new ideas. They're not afraid to loose money in the short term, with the intention of long- term rewards.

For the Amazon Go, you have to open up the app. That's a step backwards. All this modern technology, yet to start if all off amazon wants to use QR codes? Wtf man, I hope that's just an option, rather than the only option.

They didn't mention NFC; whether they'll have it or not have it. The elephant in the room is NFC. Like Apple Pay and Samsung pay and android pay. The phone wakes up by being close to the reader, your finger is already on the sensor so it instantly approves. But unlocking your phone, swiping to find the Amazon app, open the Amazon app, navigate to the QR code screen, then scan it on the machine….?

I can imagine the lines would be entering the freakin store. Like car traffic, it only takes one guy to screw up and create a back up and log jam. The person waits till they walk up to the machine, then they look for their phone, if it's in a purse it takes even longer, then they unlock with a passcode rather than fingerprint, and fiddle to get to the QR code, and god forbid their screen brightness is too low and they don't know how to change it. And while all that is happening, the person behind them didn't think to get their QR code ready. These ppl exist. I've seen them turn it complicated with NFC payments. Apple Pay is supposed to be so simple, and ppl still manage to defeat the purpose.

I guess the potential issue would be lessened if there are multiple check-in machines. And the concept is in beta. They could be adding NFC in the final version. But it's boggling why NFC wouldn't be implement from the get-go. Wonder what the reasoning was…
